How Flows The River

In 1893, Monet applied to divert part of a small river onto his property to create his famous pond. Local farmers were outraged fearing less water available or that Monet's exotic plants would poison the water.

After the local town council rejected his request, Monet bypassed them and appealed directly to the regional prefect/governor, arguing the pond was for artistic inspiration. He won approval and dug the channel to fill his water garden.. His stream still exists to feed the water lily pond.
