This is a painting I started en plein air at the castle- then finished in the studio. Every morning, this door caught the rays of the rising sun!
The ornate "Medici Door" at the castle was originally crafted for a Renaissance château in Bourdeilles built specifically for a royal visit by Catherine de' Medici, Queen Consort of France: 1547–1559 (during the reign of Henry II)
Catherine de'Medici never actually ended up visiting the Château Neuf, and construction was left unfinished. The ornate door sat kept in storage (in a box) for hundreds of years.
A previous owner of Château de Marouatte (from the Montagrier family) eventually purchased and installed the historical piece at Marouatte.
